Success Story

I’ve struggled with obesity my entire life. I was always the “fat” friend, the “fat” sister, the “you’re so pretty…for a plus-size girl”. Over the years, I tried so many diets- Weight Watchers, Atkins, Keto, South Beach, you name it and would also incorporate some exercise. I’ve lost 25lbs and gained back 50, Lost 60lbs and gained back 75, but was never successful in keeping the weight off. In 2008, when I started my first job as an RN, I met 3 nurses on my unit that had all had some form of weight loss surgery and were several years...

Lashanda Denham’s weight loss journey began in Spring of 2020. She contemplated weight loss surgery for a while, but she was still apprehensive about the impacts of recovery on her ability to be a business woman and a mother. She ultimately decided it was better for her family to pick up a little slack while she recovered from surgery versus living without her if she lost the fight for her life. Denham found Georgetown Bariatrics after researching several programs. After she had narrowed the options down to two programs, a friend encouraged her to go through Georgetown Bariatrics. After researching more...

Sophia grew up leading an active life and played basketball during her youth. While she was always in the obese category, she had a healthy body composition. Her weight loss journey really began in 2015 after life picked up the pace for her; with two jobs, college, marriage and family life came a drastic weight gain over about seven months. When Sophia’s neighbor expressed her own interest in pursuing weight loss at Georgetown Bariatrics, Sophia was initially hesitant. She had several friends and family members who continued to struggle with their weight even after bariatric surgery. However, after considering the fact that none of them had been to Georgetown Bariatrics,...

I have always struggled with my weight since I was a young child. I was always the heaviest kid in my class. The only time I was picked first for a sports event was tug of war. (LOL) Wonder why? Being a confident person, I managed to go through life being a larger person. I can recall many times, events, scenarios where I was very uncomfortable due to my weight and managed to smile on the outside but was crushing emotionally on the inside because I KNOW that society does judges larger people. I have tried many fad diets and...

First of all, I want to thank Georgetown Bariatrics and Dr. Smith for giving me the opportunity to share a little bit about my journey. I’ve struggled with my weight for the majority of my adult life. After years of dieting and trying different things, I was completely frustrated with my weight. I would lose weight quickly and then gain it back, sometimes even gaining more than when I started! After getting back up to 280 pounds, I was miserable. I did not want to look at myself in the mirror nor did I want to be photographed. I had...

I’ve always been a large person the majority of my life and battled with my weight for years. Had two major events happen in my life that helped me decide it was time for a change. The first was a major back injury that prevented me from working. This lead to major issues with depression and massive weight gain. I went up over 600 pounds. The second was the passing of my father. Made me re- evaluate my life and got me focused again. I needed to do something other than just diet to ensure I’d be around to take...

In my family, we use food for every situation of life.  Someone’s birthday?  Let’s have dinner.  Had a bad day?  Have some comfort food.  Busted your lip?  Here’s a popsicle.  New job, promotion, funeral, someone broke up with you, Sunday after church, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, St. Patrick’s Day – food is at the center of all of it.  It’s no surprise that by the time I was in fifth grade, I weighed right around 200 lbs.  In my adult life, I tried multiple diets hoping to lose the weight.  Weight Watchers had been the most successful.  In my early 20s,...

My name is Greg Emmons.  I had tried numerous diets over the last twenty years and with each diet there was failure.  My weight had ballooned up to 325lbs.  I had Type 2 diabetes was on insulin, and was taking high blood pressure and high cholesterol medications.  I had always led a very active lifestyle, but with this tremendous weight gain I found it very difficult to even accomplish simple tasks.  I attended the first weight loss seminar class at Georgetown Bariatrics and after listening to each of Dr. Smith’s team members, I felt this might be for me.  But...
